Uber protects biodiversity in the Sierra Gorda of Querétaro
Uber announces its commitment to the regeneration of the country’s natural heritage by joining the “Carbono Biodiverso” project, developed by the Sierra Gorda Ecological Group (GESG).
The Carbono Biodiverso project, implemented in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, Querétaro, seeks to restore local forests through carbon sequestration, ecosystem regeneration and biodiversity enhancement. Thanks to the participation of landowners such as Donaciano Chávez Márquez, who has protected 55 hectares of forest for the past 8 years. The model has proven to be effective in regenerating degraded forested areas and creating sustainable economic benefits for rural communities.
This collaboration reflects Uber’s focus on supporting sustainable initiatives that have a positive impact on the environment and local communities.
Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, with more than 30 years of experience, has been a pillar in the conservation and regeneration of the ecosystems of the Sierra Gorda, one of the most biodiverse areas in Mexico. Its tireless work since 1987 has restored thousands of hectares of forest and created a positive impact on both biodiversity and the communities that inhabit this unique region.
“A venturesome initiative for the forests of the Sierra Gorda, going beyond markets, financing that operates under a local protocol, viable and respectful of the owners of the forests, Queretaro is recovering its natural capital.” Commented Martha “Pati” Ruiz Corzo, Director of Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda.
Uber will support this project through a quarterly investment focused on the carbon sequestration capacity and ecosystem values of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. This support is expected to encourage the creation of this model in more regions and in the creation of local protocols that allow more owners to access payments for carbon sequestration, generating a virtuous circle between environmental conservation and the economic well-being of the communities. This commitment by Uber will be made through its Uber Planet program, a voluntary carbon offset program, allowing users to reduce their own emissions through a small additional charge on their rides, which will go to projects such as Carbono Biodiverso.
“We all have to do our part, and at Uber it is clear to us that we need to act now to ensure a green future that we can be proud of,” commented Juan Pablo Eiroa, General Manager of Uber Mexico.
With this alliance, Uber reaffirms its commitment to the environment, joining the fight against climate change and supporting the regeneration of forest ecosystems and the biodiversity that characterizes Mexico. By collaborating with projects such as Carbono Biodiverso, Uber contributes to the creation of environmental solutions that not only reduce the carbon footprint, but also promote the protection of natural habitats and boost the economy of local communities. This effort reflects Uber’s vision of a more sustainable future, where technological innovation and respect for the planet go hand in hand, creating a tangible and lasting impact on local communities and the ecological balance of the country.
