Tribute to Dr. José Sarukhán Kermez
Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda is very grateful for the knowledge and visibility of Mexico’s Natural Heritage that CONABIO and the personal trajectory of Dr. José Sarukhán Kermez have achieved for the country.
A great teacher to many of us who are in action, always inspired and proud of his work. To our dear Doctor Sarukhán, the best winds for the honorable journey ahead, may it bring you many more achievements and satisfactions.

11 Local Businesses Awarded Cypress Seal
We received the (now former) Secretary of Tourism of the Government of the State of Queretaro, Architect Mariela Moran Ocampo and the Director of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council in Latin America (GSTC), Mr. Jorge Moller, to award 11 local business owners with the Cypress Seal for Quality Tourism together with Martha Isabel Ruiz Corzo, our Director.
We recognize the efforts to maintain a standard of quality in the network of community services and we continue working to increase the number of microenterprises that have this distinctive local quality: working hand in hand, civil society and the Government of the State of Querétaro.
The projects that received the Cypress Seal are located in the communities of San Juan de los Durán, Carrizal de los Sánchez, Acatitlán del Río, El Lindero, and Saldiveña in the municipality of Jalpan de Serra, and La Colgada and La Quebradora in Pinal de Amoles, distinguishing years of work with GESG to make the region a sustainable destination.
Community Water Capture
We are working on the water recharge and sanitation project financed by PepsiCo in collaboration with Nacional Monte de Piedad. As part of the project, circular liner tanks have been installed in 13 locations in Landa de Matamoros and in 13 locations in Arroyo Seco, which make use of the arched roofs of schools or community courts to collect rainwater.
In early September, a collaboration agreement was signed between the State Water Commission, the Municipality of Jalpan de Serra, the Municipality of Pinal de Amoles and Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, to install the water tanks in 10 more locations.
In addition, thanks to the support of Rotoplas, 38 domestic rainwater harvesting systems were donated and installed in the towns of Tonatico and Agua del Maíz in Pinal de Amoles.
The Hidden Life in the Forest – Episode 11
The biodiversity and cloud forests of the Ejido Coronel Castillo in Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, protected with the support of the World Land Trust through the Sierra Gorda Ecological Group, in alliance with its ejidatarios. Biodiverse Carbon is a reality for conservation and income for its owners.
A Happy Forest
In order to collect the camera traps that allow us to share with you the wildlife in our video of the month, we visited and toured with our dear friends from the Ejido Coronel José Castillo, in the municipality of Xilitla, S.L.P. With the support of the World Land Trust they are protecting 800 hectares of their cloud forests (out of a total of 3020 ha in the neighboring ejidos). These are forests that allow us to see the splendor of the Sierra Madre Oriental and its cloud forests. Fortunately, they are now protected and their owners are proud of the fauna they harbor. From jaguars to black bears, its dense canopy is home to wildlife, which extends uninterruptedly to the neighboring Sierra Gorda.
Don Melitón Hernández is the Commissioner of the Ejido Coronel José Castillo in the Sierra de la Silleta, Xilitla, SLP, where the old trees breathe peacefully. They are magnificent cloud forests, home of the jaguar, and a gigantic water and carbon sponge, where the CO2 they store and capture is an asset for conservation and an important income for his Ejido.
An honor to work for their conservation and to photograph them.

Recyclers Network
We continue working to strengthen the Recyclers Network of the Sierra Gorda, this time benefiting 23 small recyclers and community and school collection centers in the municipalities of Arroyo Seco, Jalpan de Serra and Landa de Matamoros, providing them with barcinas and an advertising banner in order to continue encouraging their noble work.
We thank Nacional Monte de Piedad and PEPSICO for their support for the development of this project. For a cleaner Sierra Gorda, reduce your footprint!
University Field Trip “Nature-based Solutions”
This time we welcomed students from the Universidad Tecnológica de San Juan del Río, Jalpan Unit. The objective is to enrich knowledge on environmental issues and encourage the participation of young people in active citizenship to counteract the effects of climate change. A two-day agenda was developed with the participation of experts in the field from the Sierra Gorda Ecological Group. At the end of the weekend, the young people committed to form an eco-club to follow up on conservation actions inside and outside their institution.
Get to know San Juan de los Durán, stay in its cabins, get to know its forests and enjoy the birdsong that surrounds the place. Book in advance and connect with nature!
