Cloud Forests

We are happy to share a new video dedicated to a very special ecosystem, cloud forests.  Our species has limited their coverage to only a few islands of this ecosystem that survive in the Sierra Gorda and in Mexico.  They are without a doubt, magical, bursting with life and sadly are quite threatened.  This short film is made up of many different occasions when our photographer, Roberto Pedraza Ruiz went out into the field, more often than not, coming back with nothing.  We hope you enjoy it.

Visit carbonneutralplanet.org and let’s protect these natural treasures.

Giving Tuesday

In order to continue capturing the secret life of animals, support us this #GivingTuesday. This year we would love to buy more camera traps to capture more feline activity as well as other species that inhabit the Sierra Gorda.

By donating today through Global Giving, the amount raised will multiply!

Local Solutions Following COP26

The Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs and the Government of the State of Querétaro invited media representatives to a press conference during the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) to present an innovative subnational climate action with nature-based solutions that increase climate ambition, conserve biodiversity and reduce carbon footprints.

This pioneering initiative, operated by the government of the state of Querétaro in collaboration with Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, includes a subnational environmental tax, the operation of the Fund for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development in the State of Querétaro, payments for ecosystem services for the regeneration of degraded and threatened forests, other conservation activities, and incentives for the voluntary offset of carbon footprints by the private sector.

Sierra Gorda & BWild México

The Sierra Gorda is part of BWild Mexico ‘s National Photo Trap Campaign.  We hope soon to share results of the joint effort to document the wildlife of these mountains.  We are grateful for the generous donation of HD cameras that BWild’s Sam Carrera made to GESG.  Right now the cameras are working in one of the reserves that we manage.  We hope soon to be able to share another installment of the video series “secret lives of the forest” with much better quality video. Stay tuned!

Photo of the month

We celebrate every encounter with an amphibian. Four out of every 10 species is in danger of extinction and overall their populations are in decline.  Global warming, habitat destruction, contaminated waters, and chytrid fungus is killing them. The best that we can do is to protect their homes.  It gives us pride to care for many of the forests where these gems can find refuge.

Payment for CO2 Capture

On November 9th we had the pleasure and honor of receiving 25 forest landowners from the counties of Landa de Matamoros and Jalpan de Serra, at Centro Tierra. They came to receive the first CO2 capture payment as a part of the project financed by the World Land Trust. In exchange for removing grazing cattle, stopping the extraction of wood and being vigilant against forest fires, these landowners are permitting the regeneration of ecosystems.  They are protecting 2,500 hectares of forests that capture an average of 4 tons of carbon per hectare.  This is how we protect biodiversity, and assure the production of oxygen as well as hydrological storage while providing property owners an income.  Let’s work together for nature.

#ReduceYourFootprint Campaign

We are making an effort to raise awareness in the general public, the business sector and in particular the tourism sector, that carbon dioxide emissions are generated daily from transportation and operations contributing to climate change.
