This year, 2022, is a celebratory year for our organization, as we have been doing this work for 35 years!  It has been a life´s work for me with Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, filled with lots of satisfaction.  Our environmental education program creates ecologists throughout the Sierra Gorda.  Now they hold positions of power in municipal government, in rural development, the educational system, are teachers, are young people, are business owners, and micro-business owners, and primary produces and parents.  We are a critical mass; a living example of how environmental education can cultivate love for our Sierra Gorda.  Everyday there are many small actions to regenerate and conserve and alleviate some of the pressure upon the planet.

It is also the 25-year anniversary of the decree that designated the Sierra Gorda as a Biosphere Reserve.  This marked the beginning of a model of co-stewardship between the Federal government and civil society, as the only natural area that was created from the grassroots level up.  For 14 years, I had the pleasure of working as the Director of the Reserve.  Establishing the reserve, and extending the concept of what it means to defend the area.  With many battles won and more battles to fight, to conserve the integrity of the ecosystems.  Thanks to this exercise with civil society, we can celebrate conservation wins, the development of a conservation economy in the service of the forests, the diversification of productive skills, the adoption of regenerative tools, regulations of activities under this inclusive and participatory conservation model always linking multiple actors and following up on all possibilities to conserve the Sierra Gorda.

We are celebrating because this cause has allowed us to serve the highest and most beautiful expression of Patriotism, where biodiversity has a profound significance as it was woven in the time of the Creator.  Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda has worked consistently and in a focused way on results that will multiply and regenerate the planet that we love.  As individuals and as society we must lift a great wave of action for the Earth.

The first forest fire in the Sierra Gorda has already occurred, and as happens in 98% of the cases, it was caused by humans. Let’s combine our collective determination and conscience to protect life and our forests during this this dry season.

To start this year, we held sectoral meetings to address various issues related to biodiversity conservation in the Sierra Gorda. We worked with federal, state, and municipal agencies to coordinate efforts to strengthen the management of recoverable solid waste, forest fire prevention and firefighting, as well as other environmental issues such as timber and non-timber forest harvesting and attention to environmental crimes.

This project is possible thanks to Rotoplas and Fundación Merced A.C. 

Once again, and against all odds, the Sierra Gorda receives a migration of military macaws traveling long distances along the Sierra Madre Oriental in search of food. We had the pleasure of counting about 80 of them, and this group kindly shared a chinaberry tree (Melia azedarach) and its fruits for lunch. It is up to us to keep them shouting loudly in the Sierra. It is an honor to effectively protect a part of the forests upon which they depend.
