Tanques de 75,000 litros entregados
For Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda it is very important to continue with rainwater collection and sanitation actions. In recent days, 75,000 liter Liner Tanks were formally delivered to representatives of the communities of Los Charcos, Limón de la Peña and El Aguacate de Morelos. These tanks are used for rainwater harvesting in the arched roofs of school and community fields.
These events were attended by inhabitants of the communities, as well as representatives of the municipal governments, who thanked Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda and the National Monte de Piedad IAP for the support provided for this type of projects for the benefit of the population.
Clean-up days in Jalpan de Serra
During the months of January and February, various clean-up days were held in coordination with the authorities of the Municipality of Jalpan de Serra and Eco Sierra Gorda Extreme, with good participation by the inhabitants of Jalpan and surrounding areas.
Between January 23 and February 13, tons of materials were collected and separated according to the type of materials to be sent to recycling centers.
We know that this is not the solution, but we can take small actions that bear fruit, such as environmental education and community work to help keep the place we live in clean. Let’s keep the Sierra Gorda clean!
Travel and Learn in the Sierra Gorda

Also a migratory species, the Red Tanager (Piranga rubra) shares with other northern and local bird species the forests of the Sierra Gorda. This male was incredibly cooperative, as I first saw him in the distance and in order to eat a bee he came very close. In my opinion, all wildlife species are being cornered and losing space because of the incessant pressure from our species, and even more so the migratory ones with the long and dangerous journey they make twice a year. I can’t imagine silent forests without their colors because they are gone.
49 teachers graduate from the diploma course
On February 27, 2023, we held the virtual closing ceremony of the Diploma in Sustainable Development: Didactic Tools for Climate Action, taught in collaboration with the Tec de Monterrey, USEBEQ, FEMSA Foundation and GESG. We are excited to see the graduates with great interest in learning more about this topic, which as we know, is becoming more relevant every day.
Martha “Pati” Ruiz Corzo invited the graduates to continue their work as agents of change and to impact their environment in a positive way with projects that can be applied in their schools, families and friends.
We look forward to seeing you at the next Diplomado!

Economic value for the green gold of the semi-desert of Querétaro
In accompaniment to the partners we support, Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda toured the Ejidos of Maguey Verde and Enramadas, located in the Municipality of Peñamiller, as part of the project “Development of inclusive supply chain and higher added value in aromatic species and pine nut for the conservation of the semi-desert region in the State of Queretaro”.
These ejidos will participate in this local capacity building with the sponsorship of AECID (Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation) and SEDESU (Secretariat for Sustainable Development of the State of Querétaro), with the objective of regenerative protocols and regulations to harvest sustainably the non-timber forest products in the region.
Minka Dev conducted the workshop “Market Access Strategies”, which seeks to establish marketing channels, collective branding and a business model that gives added value for the best practices towards regenrating the landscape.
The project will work in different stages, from best practices in harvesting, packaging, generating brand identity, to marketing at different points of sale.
Putting the Biosphere Reserve in Order
It is official, a campaign to bring order to tourism in the Sierra Gorda begins. The Secretary of Sustainable Development of the State of Querétaro announced on official social media channels about the coordination between the State Police and the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Querétaro. As tourism picks up, tour operators invited to carry out activities in 4×4 vehicles called “racers” are not allowed, to prevent the destruction of the natural heritage and damaging biodiversity. “We do not appreciate the environmental heritage that the Sierra Gorda offers us, an ecological reserve, the second most biodiverse in Mexico, took endless years to develop and it is not fair that an activity of a few hours destroys that heritage. Let’s be empathetic” he mentioned in his tweet.
In this same sense Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda celebrates and supports the intervention of the corresponding authorities, in support of the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas, to initiate the regulation of tourism activities in the 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚 𝐝𝐞 𝐥𝐚 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐚.
Congratulations to the Secretary of Tourism of the State of Querétaro for assuming the solution to these abuses to Nature and local communities. For an orderly tourism, a quality local offer, a profitable source of income for landowners, without impacts or footprint for nature, with respect and retribution to local communities.
