CO2 as Capital for Conservation
We were once again pleased to welcome forest owners who are our conservation partners and receive their biannual payment for the carbon that their forests store and capture thanks to the support of the World Land Trust. Thus, 2500 ha (6178 acres) of temperate and cloud forests are effectively protected, ensuring the home of biodiversity and environmental services that benefit us all. The main topic of the meeting was the prevention of forest fires, which with the present drought are a real threat. Now, a standing forest is worth more than a forest that has been cut down and burned because it means a real income for its owners.
Building an Environmental Agenda
On April 23rd a significant meeting was held in our facilities, in commemoration of Earth Day, the workshop was titled “Building an environmental agenda in electoral times, for the conservation of the Sierra Gorda.” GESG convened special guests and the candidates for elected office within the Biosphere Reserve and we received those from the municipalities of Arroyo Seco, Pinal de Amoles, Jalpan de Serra and Landa de Matamoros, in addition to environmental leaders, companions, staff and experts of GESG to address, to raise awareness and show the work, strategies and solutions that GESG is working on in various localities. The objective was to raise these issues and demand that their candidates prioritize water, sanitation, solid waste, tourism, and forest fires.

Workshop for Micro-entrepreneurs
Seeking to strengthen the ties and capacities within the Tourism Services Network, on April 24, the Financial Education and Teamwork Workshop was held with the participation of different micro-entrepreneurs from the Lodging Network, the Artisan Trail and the Flavor Trail located in the municipalities of Jalpan de Serra, Pinal de Amoles, Arroyo Seco and Peñamiller.
In addition to promoting motivation as a strategy for improving competencies, setting goals and recognizing personal and collective achievements within the Network, the importance of making savings was emphasized and the value of the financial cycle was covered, emphasizing the need to acquire effective financial tools for optimal business management.
This workshop represents a significant step in strengthening the skills and capacities of the micro-entrepreneurs of the Community Tourism Services Network, enabling them not only to improve their business practices, but also to contribute to the economic development of their communities.
Earth Festival in Xilitla
In the community of Buenavista Mirador, Xilitla, S.L.P., an Earth Festival was held with the participation of nine elementary schools and more than 300 people in attendance. The work being done in these communities in the municipality of Xilitla is impressive, thanks to the support of the World Land Trust, and to the teachers for making this event fruitful and to the students for their participation and dedication in favor of Mother Earth. It is a valuable effort to take care of our environment and promote environmental awareness!

Photo of the Month
Due to the extreme drought that has been going on since last year, the Green Macaws of the Sierra Gorda have had to explore new territories in search of food and water and are getting therefore too close to communities. Recently two macaws, in Mabí and Maguey Blanco, suffered broken wings, where we assume they have been stoned and later rescued by decent people and handed over to the authorities for attention. This is a disgrace, where the worst of our species comes out, instead of helping or at least respecting them, they attack them. Please denounce to the authorities whoever does it.
