Season 2025 – Earth Festivities
Music, songs and action for forests and water have already begun in the schools of the Sierra Gorda! We started with environmental education in order to raise awareness and make a call for the care of the planet in students, teachers and parents in the Earth Festivals. The theme this year, “Forests and Water”, will be convened in strategic schools in the Sierra Gorda, where the group Gaviota will present in each institution its play entitled “The future of water is today”. The support and alliance of the communities and teachers make the Sierra Gorda a protected and loved Reserve.
Alliances to Join Forces
Meeting with the RBSG-CONANP team headed by Fátima Lira, Director of the federally protected area, and the GESG team headed by Pati Ruiz Corzo, to discuss the environmental agenda and how to enhance actions and collaborate in the best way, particularly on the issue of forest fires, water sanitation, environmental education and productive diversification. Congratulations to the civil society and federal government working as allies for the conservation and economic development of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve (RBSG in Spanish).
Queretaro Carbon Seal Workshop
On February 19, a workshop organized by SEDESU and with the support of UK Pact of the British Embassy and MEXICO2, was held at the Club de Industriales in Queretaro City to explain what the carbon tax consists of and how it works, as well as the new characteristics of the Low Carbon Emissions Seal of the State of Queretaro, to more than 80 participants from the business sector and environmental consulting firms that already offset or are considering it.
Within this framework, Roberto Pedraza, Deputy Director of the Alliance for the Conservation of the RBSG, shared with the attendees the concept, methodology and advantages of Biodiverse Carbon as the best option to offset emissions within the Querétaro Seal and its great impact on the preservation of forests, biodiversity and its owners in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve.
Forest Fire Prevention and Firefighting
The first forest fire of the season occurred near the El Lobo Delegation, in the municipality of Landa de Matamoros, caused by an arsonist who last year caused several fires in that municipality. But as always, we would like to thank our fellow brigade members from CONANP, SEDEA, SEDENA, GESG and Civil Protection for their dedication and for their hard work, all to protect Life. But the situation with this criminal is a pending issue for the authorities.
And, we are pleased to share that the Valle Verde Brigade of the Sierra Gorda Ecological Group is now active and ready to join the forest fire prevention and combat work alongside the official brigades of CONAFOR, CONANP, SEDEA and Civil Protection. It is made up of experienced, trained and equipped residents of the area and personnel from this institution. To opne de fire season, we hosted in our facilities authorities and representatives of 7 Forest Fire Fighting Brigades (2 from CONANP, 3 from CONAFOR and 2 from SEDEA) to deliver to each of them equipment that will undoubtedly help in the work of fire management and firefighting. The equipment consisted of 7 kits, each one with 1 chainsaw, 2 radio units, 2 Pulaski axes and 4 collapsible backpacks with 20 liters of capacity. It is a pleasure to add as civil society to the equipment of our colleagues, emphasizing coordination and communication to protect the ecosystems and communities of the Sierra Gorda. The heroes of the forests are preparing for the coming dry season!
Photovoltaic energy at our Headquarters
We now have photovoltaic energy in our facilities thanks to the support and generous donation of HENKEL Capital, S.A. de C.V., which allows us to have stable electrical energy, and this allows us to make our administrative work more efficient. And of course a considerable saving in our operating costs. Thank you HENKEL!
Progress as an EarthCheck Sustainable Destination
On February 10, the interinstitutional “Green Group” held a key working meeting within the certification process of the Sierra Gorda as an EarthCheck Sustainable Destination.
The session was led by SEDESU’s Undersecretary of the Environment, with the participation of representatives from the State Secretariat of Tourism, the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve’s Management and the five municipalities in the region, especially from the areas of tourism and municipal public services.
During the meeting, key issues such as wastewater treatment and solid waste management, which are essential for meeting sustainability indicators, were discussed. Specific indicators for the tourism sector were also reviewed.
To close the day, each area defined the next steps to continue advancing in the fulfillment of these indicators. In this process, GESG plays a key role as a promoter, since its daily activities contribute significantly to the fulfillment of an important percentage of indicators.
