CO2 for a Conservation Economy
Many mountain forest owners were very happy on April 14 after a new payment event for the capture of CO2 in their forests. Now their protection means an economic return greater than traditional activities and it regenerates, mending the fabric of life and maintaining its capacity to provide environmental services. Thanks to the Government of the State of Querétaro for its leadership, through the work of SEDESU and the World Land Trust, which allow this virtuous transition from degradation to regeneration. We are honored to be partners in this effort, working with local landowners so that they can access this conservation economy.
Three Expos for Life
On April 11, three simultaneous exhibitions were inaugurated at the gates of the Alameda Hidalgo in Queretaro City. Thanks to our colleagues, GESG, SEDESU and the Querétaro City Mayor´s office for making this project possible, which brings biodiversity and beneficiaries together with the exhibition “Carbono Biodiverso, regenera los bosques de Querétaro”. Start the tour at the corner of Corregidora and Zaragoza avenues, and learn about its scope and beneficiaries, as each photograph is interpreted by its author Roberto Pedraza Ruiz, award-winning photographer and naturalist and Deputy Director of the Sierra Gorda Alliance. Follow the tour through Constituyentes and Pasteur Avenues to learn about “Natural Treasures of Querétaro” and “Climate Actions for Sustainability” by SEDESU, a virtuous collaboration between civil society and the state government.
Fire Management Coordination
We hosted a productive meeting to strengthen firefighting and fire management capacity in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. We had the presence of state authorities, headed by Marco Antonio del Prete of SEDESU, SEDEA, federal representatives of CONAFOR, CONANP, mayors of Pinal de Amoles and Jalpan de Serra and Civil Protection, the GESG for civil society and forest fire brigade members. As a result, operational and training capacities will be strengthened, as well as the personal protection equipment of the combatants, vehicles, communication equipment and, very importantly, the ability to act as a team. There are currently 2 CONANP brigades operating in the RBSG, 1 CONAFOR official brigade and 3 rural brigades through the municipalities, 2 from SEDEA and the GESG brigade based in Valle Verde. Undoubtedly, forest fires and the effects of climate change are on the table and each dry season will bring its own. But for the remainder of this and 2026, we will be better prepared.
New Edition of the Diploma
We are pleased to share that a new edition of the diploma course “Didactic Tools for Climate Action”, which we offer in conjunction with the Virtual Learning Center of the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, started on February 24 with an excellent response, with the participation of 237 teachers from the state of Querétaro and 32 from San Luis Potosi. We appreciate the commitment of each participant, the support and interest of the USEBEQ and educational authorities and remind you that the next diploma course is tentatively scheduled to start in September. We continue to strengthen knowledge and joint action!
Protecting the Forest
This spring has been complicated and highly impacted by forest fires, as the conditions caused by climate change, with high temperatures and extreme dryness, have increased the fire’s potential. In April there were three particularly complicated fires. The one in La Cercada, caused by land clearing and the criminal use of fire, in which our Valle Verde Brigade together with the Jalpan rural CONAFOR Brigade and others fought for several days in its remote location, and which destroyed cloud and temperate forests. The one in Soledad de Zaragoza, in Xilitla, in which we were fighting for two days, but with the fire in La Cercada we had to leave, but it was fought by hundreds of volunteers from the Ejidos, and present the solid and professional work of the personnel of CONAFOR and CONANP-RBSG. A very complicated topography, the remoteness of the area and strong winds did their part, and finally suffocated by a providential rain. And the El Madroño fire, an atypical fire due to its voracity and speed, because in less than 12 hours it burned almost 1200 ha. If it were not for a cold front it could have affected two communities. We were also present at the fire, fighting alongside colleagues from other Brigades and hundreds of volunteers. It is obvious that the Pyrocene is a reality and our actions must be aimed at preparing for and mitigating its effects.
San Pedro Escanela Treatment Plant Project
An informative meeting was held in San Pedro Escanela, Pinal de Amoles. At this meeting, representatives of Grupo de Tecnologías Alternativas, with the support of Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, presented the wastewater treatment plant project to their neighbors.
This project seeks to address the contamination of its stream and the El Salto waterfall, caused by the discharge of untreated sewage. The initiative was promoted by the local delegate, who responded to the inhabitants’ interest in rescuing this important natural and tourist resource.
During the meeting, the environmental and social benefits of the plant, its operation and its contribution to water sanitation were shared. It was also announced that the Municipality of Pinal de Amoles will participate in the process, the State Water Commission (CEA) will be in charge of financing the work, and that the aim is to train the inhabitants themselves so that they can operate the plant autonomously.
The community expressed its willingness to actively collaborate in this proposal that strengthens the care of the environment and water cleanliness.
Celebrate Earth Day with Good News
In the framework of Earth Day, Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda is proud to share a significant advance in our actions for the regeneration of the planet: the community groups that operate the biological chambers are now fully trained and several of them have managed to sell their first organic compost harvest.
This achievement is the result of a collective commitment to transform organic waste into a valuable resource, reduce the generation of greenhouse gases, extend the life of landfills, raise public awareness and promote sustainable practices at the community level. The biological chambers are an environmental tool and a development opportunity for the communities that participate.
We deeply appreciate the efforts of all those who make this project possible and reaffirm our commitment to the ecological regeneration of the Sierra Gorda.
Increased Local Capacities in the Semidesert
We received a visit from Compromiso Social Banamex, with whom we followed up on the project to strengthen 5 ejidos that use aromatic species such as oregano and damiana. We reviewed progress in two essential oil distillation workshops, POEMA and OROMILLER for the production of medicinal products and natural cosmetics, where the communities are working on the distillation and transformation of oregano to produce high-value cosmetic products. The training event was attended by representatives from the ejidos of Agua Fría, Boquillas, El Pilón and Maguey Verde, all belonging to the municipality of Peñamiller. We continue to promote the sustainable use of oregano, generating opportunities and strengthening the local economy, thanks to everyone involved and Banamex Social Commitment!
