Mexico’s “green jewel” went from being threatened to becoming a conservation benchmark
The winner of the Champions of the Earth Prize 2013 continues to inspire the world with her community conservation model. Discover the life story of Pati Ruiz Corzo in Querétaro, Mexico.
Pati Ruiz directs the Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda IAP, a citizens’ initiative that has helped conserve Mexico’s only nature reserve to have been formed by a citizens’ movement.
A model and current example of what collective action by people can achieve for the future of the planet.
GESG, one of the 23 winning organizations of the GEF Assembly Challenge Inclusive Program
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) selected 23 civil society organizations, including Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, as winners of the GEF Assembly Challenge Inclusive Program. Salvador Sarabia Rivas attended the event, which was held in Vancouver, Canada.
This innovative program demonstrates a commitment to supporting and empowering community-driven climate and environmental projects.
During this period, the Sierra Gorda Ecological Group has actively participated by sharing its experience in various panels and sessions. Their contribution not only highlights their leadership in environmental conservation, but also their dedication to fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing to address climate and natural challenges.
His participation in these instances reflects his commitment to a sustainable future and the continuous improvement of environmental conditions.

Tours of properties in the Sello Querétaro
We visited the La Sierrita property, owned by Don Inocente Zúñiga, located in the mountains of Pinal de Amoles. Previously, this land was used by its owner for cattle raising purposes.
Today, thanks to the Querétaro Seal, offsetting carbon emissions and the corresponding payment, the owner dedicates it to regenerative management for its conservation.
This management has triggered an impressive process of natural regeneration, where we have witnessed the appearance of new oaks, pines and other ecologically relevant species that dominate these temperate, moss-covered forests and play a crucial role as a carbon sink. It is evident that, despite previous cattle ranching practices that affected the land, the area is undergoing a regenerative process at an astonishing speed.
This program is being managed by the Sierra Gorda Ecological Group in collaboration with the Secretary of Sustainable Development of the State of Querétaro and Sello Querétaro.
Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda’s participation in the Mexico Carbon Forum
In the context of the carbon markets presented in MEXICO2, the environmental markets platform of the Mexican Stock Exchange Group (BMV Group), the collaboration between the State of Querétaro, Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda IAP and Open Forests stands out for its real and local approach for the benefit of communities and the environment.
This has been achieved through the implementation of a unique and pioneering subnational public policy, which allows companies based in the State to offset their CO2 emissions, and with a local protocol developed according to local socioeconomic conditions, an initiative jointly led by the State’s Secretary of Sustainable Development and Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda.
As in other protected areas in the country, the inhabitants of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, including small landowners, ejidos and communities, have maintained over generations a series of traditional activities and practices that have impacted local biodiversity in various ways. Now, there is a clear and more profitable option to achieve the regeneration of what has been damaged.
Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda had an outstanding participation in the Mexico Carbon Forum 2023 in Querétaro City, sharing its experience with SEDESU.
Biodegradable Soaps
At Centro Tierra’s facilities, we had the pleasure of receiving the Ecolosía team, who conducted a demonstration focused on the use of biodegradable soaps and their viability in the market.
The main purpose of this activity was to raise awareness among the population and encourage the adoption of soaps that are free of phosphates and other chemical compounds harmful to the environment, especially with regard to water resources.
These products, being concentrated and rapidly biodegradable, not only contribute to the protection of the environment, but also enable a significant reduction in the need for packaging.
Improved Collection Centers
Collection centers play an essential role in responsible waste management within a community. These centers are facilities specially designed to collect and categorize different types of waste, with the purpose of minimizing their environmental impact and promoting sustainability.
Following this line, in Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, we continue to strengthen these centers, on this occasion, we went to the municipality of Peñamiller, where we supported “La Estación” by providing the necessary materials to build a 6 x 10 meter roof. The objective of this intervention is to improve the conditions in which the collected material is stored.
Remember that you have the option of taking your separated solid waste to these centers, where it will be received and managed appropriately. Collaborate with us in this effort for a more sustainable environment!

Photo of the Month
The White Cedar (Cupressus lusitanica) is a representative tree of the cloud forests of the Sierra Gorda. With an excellent wood, the best specimens were loaded to make roofing board or beams. They become magnificent, several times centenarians and almost always with a thick suit of mosses and ferns. In the picture, an old grandfather in a cloud forest, which grew and lives giving shade to pumas, jaguars, humble armadillos and its roots linked to the hyphae of fungi. A real lord of the forest.
