Community Learning Center is Operational

Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda (GESG) joined the Tecnológico de Monterrey Network of Community Centers to benefit the communities in the Sierra Gorda, Querétaro.  When you select our campus to gain access, the curriculum boosts entrepreneurship and education for employment opportunities and is available to anyone with access to the internet in the region or elsewhere. We are leading this initiative with help from SEDESU. On Aug. 18 we had a press conference on Facebook Live to launch the Centro Tierra Sierra Gorda, Community Virtual Learning Center. To watch the press conference recording, click here.

Towards a Conservation Economy

At the Centro Tierra facility, 16 landowners received their annual payment from the Secretariat of Sustainable Development and the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), Concurrent Funds program for the protection and conservation of 1,000 hectares of forests and jungle in the counties of Jalpan de Serra and Landa de Matamoros within the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve.
The Payment for Environmental Services Program was created as an economic incentive for forest landowners who generate services like: water filtration, capture and storage of CO2, biodiversity conservation, soil retention, among others.
Forests help mitigate the impact of global warming, ensure hydrological recharge and maintain biodiversity among other services.  Their preservation is vital.

Reforesting with Earth Day Network

So far this year, we have distributed 46,550 trees to 28 communities in the counties of Jalpan de Serra and Pinal de Amoles.  Thanks to Earth Day Network for your support and the State of Querétaro Secretariat of Agricultural Development for providing trees from state-run nurseries for this community reforestation project.  With the rainy season we hope that they take root and grow!  As they do, they will regulate the microclimate, provide hydrological recharge and capture carbon.

Do You Want to Explore the Sierra Gorda?

We invite you to visit the family and community businesses that offer lodging, food and artisanal goods.  Together we have been weaving a conservation economy over two decades.
Surrounded by nature, rivers, forests, or very close to the attractions, you can find diverse accommodation options that make up the Eco-lodging Trail.  Along the length of Flavor Trail you can enjoy different regional dishes, and along the Artisans Trail you can find locally-made handicrafts or make your own.  Ask for more information through the Sierra Gorda network: https://sierragordaecotours.com/en/home/

Global EverGreening Alliance: Strategic Allies

The vision of the Alliance is to see that degraded rural agricultural, pastoral and forest lands in the low to middle income countries are restored through the regeneration and integration of trees and are sustainably managed by local communities. Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda joined the Committee this month and will participate on a bi-monthly basis.

Join the Little by Little Campaign

The Little by Little campaign will be held from September 13 to 17, 2021. During this week, donations made to our organization on the Global Giving platform will receive a 50% match of up to $ 25 USD.

Video of the Month

It is a thrill to see that the BBC series about Mexico and it´s mountains filmed in 2017, with participation from Roberto Pedraza, is now being featured on Animal Planet.

Photo of the Month

The work days of our park rangers are special.  Departures at daybreak, hours behind the wheel, long walks, many times without a trail and over difficult rocky terrain, losing the way and making a way at the tip of a machete, finding friendly rattlesnakes and Fer-de-Lances, ticks as a courtesy and laborious fence repair.  But the satisfaction that we have, effectively guarding the forests, the home of the bear and the jaguar, is priceless. It is an honor.
