Global Giving – Camera Traps Appeal

This year we received support from 75 donors on the Global Giving Platform who donated $6,246 in total. Help us with this final appeal, to

Give the gift of 10 cameras for wildcat footage (60 days remaining to reach goal of $2K)

SEDESU & GESG

In order to coordinate efforts around solid waste management in the Sierra Gorda, we held a meeting at Centro Tierra earlier in December.  Marco del Prete Tercero, lead of the Secretary of Sustainable Development in Querétaro, along with members of the SEDESU office of Ecological Development were in attendance; also present were the mayors of the Municipalities of Jalpan de Serra, Landa de Matamoros, Arroyo Seco and San Joaquín and representatives from Pinal de Amoles, Peñamiller and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas.

We celebrate the collaboration to improve waste management and value the recyclable materials in the Sierra Gorda.

Here’s to a clean Sierra Gorda!
Reduce your footprint!

Xilitla’s Biodiversity Carbon

This month, the Biodiversity Carbon project in Xilitla, S.L.P. paid a third payment to the Boards of Directors of the four beneficiary ejidos: Soledad de Zaragoza, Ollita del Pino, La Trinidad and Coronel José Castillo. All this with the support of the World Land Trust (UK) through its Carbon Balanced program to protect 3,020 hectares of temperate and cloud forests, where jaguars, chivizcoyos and rare magnolias still call home. With these payments to the ejidos, we are able to ensure the permanence and capture of CO2 in this forest massif and know it´s providing extraordinary water recharge and protecting biodiversity, as well as helping fight against poverty, which fills us with pride. The ejido members have demonstrated a serious commitment, respecting the agreements and effectively protecting their amazing forests.

Photo of the month

This is how the Sweetgum trees in the Sierra Gorda receive the Winter Solstice, halfway between its autumn tints and the stillness of winter when its branches are without leaves. The light filtered by the clouds of a cold front helped to achieve this image, in which I used two exposures on the same file, playing with the focus and blur. Last year I photographed those same trees, which are old acquaintances and patient models. Wishing them and the troubled biodiversity all the best in 2022.

Evergreen School & Justo Sierra Elementary School

Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda in coordination with the Director Roberto Villareal of the elementary school “Justo Sierra” located in Pinal de Amoles, organized the delivery of an annual donation by Evergreen School in Querétaro to the most vulnerable communities.

The representatives of the parents’ committee of the Madroño elementary school attended to receive a very generous donation from the Evergreen School, which was coordinated by its Director, Mtra. Ma. De Los Ángeles Ruiz Corzo, and representative of the parents association of the School, who spoke a few words highlighting the importance of their participation in the conservation of the forests, as well as the actions they take to maintain the healthy balance of their ecosystems.

Wildlife Needs Allies

Congratulations to Ena Buenfil for the inauguration of the first fully equipped wildlife clinic at the Selva Teenek Ecopark facilities, a unique effort for the fauna of the Huasteca Potosina. We admire her tenacity, dedication and defense of those who have no voice motivating her work. Global Greengrants Fund helped with funding to equip it, and GESGIAP collaborated with the release back to the Wild in Sierra Gorda´s protected of two species that had undergone a successful rehabilitation:  the tamandua (an anteater) and an ocelot. We unite hands for Life, and next year will strengthen this collaboration to protect the shared fauna in the Huasteca and Sierra Gorda.

Where To Go In 2022

After weaving a conservation economy for more than two decades in the Sierra Gorda, we invite you to get to know the family and community-run businesses that offer lodging, food and handicrafts. Surround yourself with nature, rivers, forests at the main sites of comfortable accommodation options that make up the Eco-lodge Trail. Along the road you can enjoy different regional and seasonal dishes on the Flavor Trail; and on the Artisans Trail you can buy a local handicraft or even participate in the production process.
