Sierra Gorda: Sustainable Destination

Headed by the Secretary of Tourism of the State of Queretaro and in coordination with the Secretary of Sustainable Development and Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, we have begun  the certification process of the Sierra Gorda with the EarthCheck guidelines.

In a meeting with Mariela Moran, Secretary of Tourism of the state, an invitation was extended to the mountain range municipalities to join this process that will allow us to position the Sierra Gorda as a Sustainable Destination. This designation will allow us to access new markets and at the local level to organize the governance processes of the territory, for which the participation of the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas will be key in the organization of the tourist activity.

Solid Waste Management

In conjunction with the Secretary of Sustainable Development of the State (SEDESU), a working meeting was held to follow up on the environmental agenda on solid waste for the Regional Program for the Prevention and Integral Management of Waste and the Circular Economy Regulations in the Municipalities that make up the Biosphere Reserve.

The Department of Environmental Control of the SEDESU, the Cristina Cortinas Foundation, who since 2018 supports the regulation and regulation efforts in the Sierra Gorda, as well as the Municipalities of Arroyo Seco, Landa de Matamoros, Jalpan de Serra and Pinal de Amoles through the areas of Municipal Services and Ecology Coordinations, participated in the meeting.

Photo of the Month

When decent cold fronts finally arrive, frost and ice give an ephemeral but beautiful patina to the shapes of these mountains and forests, much needed for their health and forest pest control. That young pine had a light of its own among its siblings, and the chunks of ice breaking away from the canopy added to the illumination. In addition, it is very clear how trees and forests add to hydrological recharge. Outside the forest the ground was completely dry, inside the forest the water was everywhere.

Water Management and Sustainable Sanitation

We continued with work meetings to address the issues of water security and water treatment in the region. We collaborated to identify strategies to generate an ecological water culture and methodologies for effective water treatment, with the participation of the State Water Commission, Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, the Sierra Gorda municipalities, and experts on the subject.

The construction of tanks to collect rainwater on the region’s roofs will begin, as well as the identification of sites susceptible to wastewater treatment through wetlands.
