Collaboration with IBUNAM

We facilitated the visit of Dr. Othón Alcántara from the Institute of Biology of UNAM and his team to evaluate the genetic diversity of Magnolia rzedowskiana, an endemic and relatively recently described species that only grows in some cloud forests in Querétaro and S.L.P. It’s an honor to protect most of the Queretaro population and share that thanks to the removal of cattle and any extractive activity, we have an increase of at least 600% thanks to young specimens. Dr. Alcántara’s work will allow us to know the health and genetic diversity of their populations, which is indispensable for the long-term conservation of the species. Throughout the journey, we encounter fresh territorial markings of a puma, as well as a rare ajol (Penelope purpurascens). The Sierra Gorda wildlife beat strong in spaces effectively protected by the GESG.

Discover Eden

We were pleased to support another Sierra Gorda entrepreneur, Mrs. Itzel Aguas and her family in the Tejamanil Ejido in Pinal de Amoles, with basic equipment for the operation of her food processing workshop and dining room, built with resources from CONANP’s PROCODES.
The support consisted of furniture, such as a pair of tables, benches, crockery and whiteware thanks to the support of Nacional Monte de Piedad, which will allow them to provide better service to visitors who walk the trail that leads to the El Enselmo viewpoint.
They are undoubtedly very committed to conservation and to establishing a model of tourism that respects their environment and visitors.  How can you help?  Come visit them!

Photo of the month

The Brown-backed Solitaire has the best voice in the forests of the Sierra Gorda and defines its soundscape. It lives in its temperate and cloud forests, but during the winter it comes down to the lowland jungles. Thousands of them have been condemned for the “love of birds” to live locked up in small cages, which is obviously a crime. They belong to the forest, to the play of light on the leaves and where they can find a varied diet.
