Celebrating 38 Years of Activity

38 years ago, we began environmental education and reforestation work in 1987, taking the first steps towards the regeneration of the Sierra Gorda. Celebrating life, with a total appreciation for the wisdom of Nature, amazed by the prodigy and immense love with which it surrounds our existence, its fruits, its beauty, its majesty, the intricate network of infrastructure that blesses us with its services. We recognize ourselves as children of the Earth, those feelings that have deepened over the 38 years of our work and that today continue to drive us. We mobilize all possibilities to relieve pressure, heal and reconnect our lost society with this marvel, fill its emptiness with conscience and service, face the emergency and employ ourselves to the fullest, seeking to bring forth the great effort in an enterprising collective. The values of common good and retribution to the environment sow hope, and it depends entirely on us and the maximum effort that we are capable of raising and sustaining. With urgent new values for our society, let´s activate all the inner strength that this modern somnolence has been in charge of burying.

Our journey is a continuous effort, one that after decades has allowed us to crystallize our dreams. Today they are realities, an orchestration of regenerative activities with civil participation, social and environmental results. It seems like only yesterday that we were talking about community tourism, about the valorization of forest services, about a citizen force in action, about the involvement of the multiple actors required for a far-reaching solution. Yes, we dreamed of aligning the stars in favor, with local micro-entrepreneurship joining as a great wave that today rises as a reality for local communities. Here we are with everything to do, with lines of action in operation for more communities, more social participation and the indispensable linkage of public stakeholders at all levels.

Experience

The Sierra Gorda Ecological Group (GESGIAP) leads and coordinates the Alliance for the Conservation of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, together with sister organizations that share its objective, a bioregional network that works at all levels, and in this way defending the Reserve’s ecosystems and species. For 38 years, this grassroots social movement has continued with an active presence in the communities, involving multiple generations, and in 1997 achieving the consensus of all sectors for the presidential decree that created the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve.

  1. Today we operate 4 specific strategies:
    1) Community environmental education
    2) Regenerative management of natural resources
    3) Productive diversification
    4) Community tourism
Actions:
  • Since our inception, we have built bridges, woven networks and worked with agencies from the three levels of government, local communities and a wide range of national and international entities and donors.
  • For 38 years, our most solid allies have been the diverse members of the mountain society, who almost 4 decades later continue to be indispensable partners for our work.
  • Permanent community environmental education program, a cornerstone of our activities and a force for change in the Sierra Gorda. Teachers, parents and students for generations have joined our activities and together have transformed environmental awareness and practices in the region. The Earth Festivals, which have become a tradition, celebrating 60 every year, the Green Schools and four generations of graduates of the diploma course “Teaching Tools for Climate Action” in alliance with ITESM, with 600 teachers implementing their action plan back in their schools, as allies.
  • We support the operation of more than 125 collection centers for recyclable materials throughout the Sierra Gorda, and 8 recycling micro-enterprises, which work autonomously to remove thousands of tons of recyclable materials, in a circular economy.
  • Biodiversity protection in private protected reserves and spaces returned to nature. Cloud forests, temperate and lowland rainforests, where jaguars, pumas and bears can safely roam.
  • Adaptation to climate change, with the installation of 68 tanks with a capacity for 75,000 liters by taking advantage of the arched roofs of school fields, and promoting public policies for rainwater harvesting.
  • Productive diversification empowering women and consolidating a conservation economy, with 250 families in 32 communities, developing new skills and strengthening capacities with 56 micro-enterprises and 350 direct beneficiaries.
  • Operation of the Centro Tierra educational space, with initiatives oriented to sustainability and offering a varied curriculum and training events.
  • Operation of the Sierra Gorda, Nature and Culture Destination, with tourism and services, in which micro-entrepreneurs and communities operate their own facilities, capitalize on their landscapes and offer the best experience to visitors. 27 Flavor Trail restaurants and 22 sites of the Lodging Network await you.
  • Operation of the state mechanism “Sello Querétaro”, to reduce the carbon footprint of corporations in the state through a pioneering public policy consolidated by SEDESU. The companies which must report emissions and pay a carbon tax, when choosing Carbono Biodiverso for part of their obligation, pay forest owners for forest regeneration and carbon sequestration on their land. Thus 32,847 ha of forests of 120 owners and 9 Ejidos are capturing 357,034 tCO2e and add to a virtuous circle and generating greater income than that of their traditional activities.
  • Technification for oregano management with 3 Ejidos in the semi-desert: advising, improving oregano harvesting processes and equipping a workshop for the production of cosmetic products, always with the Ejidatarios and local communities improving their livelihoods.
  • As guardians of pollination and bees, supporting 50 beekeepers with training and supplies, seeking the protection of these insects and the generational replacement of producers.
  • We work with 60 primary producers, train, provide agroecological management to recover their soils, native pollinators, and improve community self-sufficiency.
