From 21-24 November this year , we received a group of 24 HSBC Mexico “Environmental Leaders” in the Sierra Gorda, who came to learn about the projects that have been developed in the region to fight climate change and help conserve biodiversity.

The working relationship between the “HSBC Environmental Leaders” and the Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda (GESG) began in 2011. Generations of the HSBC “Green Task Force” have been created and have learned from a living experience about how to combat climate change and practice sustainable development.

HSBC is a very important partner for the Sierra Gorda project. Thanks to their support, a variety of productive and regenerative activities have been developed in the region, resulting in great pride.

The Environmental Leaders program is part of a nationwide initiative, with 24 HSBC employees chosen from 120 candidates from across Mexico, in which they receive sustainable development training and then develop an environmental project that helps fight climate change and create positive change in their personal surroundings.

The Director of Corporate Sustainability at HSBC Mexico, Miguel Angel Laporta, demonstrated the commitment that HSBC has to this program, noting that “passion and good intentions are useless if we do not put them into practice, as ‘Environmental Leaders’ we must be an example to follow.”

During their four-day stay, they met beneficiaries of productive projects in communities living in extreme poverty; learned about biodiversity and all the projects being run in the Sierra Gorda; observed birds and other flora and fauna of the region and learned how you can develop a sustainable lifestyle and implement eco- construction techniques.

In addition, they were introduced to the sustainable forestry and soil regeneration programs that aim to sequester carbon, through using bio-fertilizers, micro-organisms, Keyline design (logical land design that helps capture more water, build soil fertility and avoid erosion) and forest carbon monitoring. At the end of the visit, the three best shots taken by the Environment Leaders were selected and awarded a prize, courtesy of Sierra Gorda Products.
