Honor the Heroes of the Forest

On July 11, National Wildfire Fighter’s Day, we celebrated and recognized the heroic and arduous work of those who risk their lives to safeguard the ecosystems of the Sierra Gorda with a meal and social gathering, and 30 raffle prizes provided by GESG were given to the attendees. We thank the brigadistas and staff of CONANP, CONAFOR, SEDEA, Civil Protection and our colleagues of the GESG Brigade for their work, which allowed the fires registered this year to be relatively small thanks to the collective collaboration. And we are ready to face whatever the 2025 season brings.
You can help us be prepared for next year, and Global Giving is one way to donate or directly to GESG.

    Verification in the Forest

After years of degradation due to timber extraction and livestock overgrazing, it is essential to stop these activities and allow natural regeneration. In this way, shrubs and young trees can grow and gradually recuperate their ecosystem. Therefore, our colleagues are in the field visiting with landowners of the properties benefiting from CO2 capture payments, whether private or Ejidos, both from the World Land Trust and companies offsetting to acquire SEDESU’s Querétaro Seal for Low Emissions. Our forestry team does an in situ review of the monitoring plots where the increase in biomass is measured in order to provide certainty to projects of very wide socio-environmental impact.

    Circular Economy by Separating Garbage

In conjunction with SEDESU through the Environmental Control Directorate, a review of the Municipal Regulations for the Integral Management of Solid Waste and the circular economy was carried out.
The transition of the Regional Program for the Prevention and Integral Management of Solid Waste of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve was also discussed, in which the Municipal Services and Ecology Departments of 4 current Municipal Cabinets were present, as well as representatives of the Elected Candidates for the 2024-2027 period.
The purpose of the meeting was to inform the incoming administrations of the status of the Regional Program, as well as the challenges in terms of solid waste management. For a cleaner Sierra Gorda, let’s support waste separation and minimize our garbage footprint.

    The Forest Recovers

The horrible drought this past Spring, apart from the forest fires that were exacerbated throughout Mexico, affected thousands of trees due to the complete lack of humidity and the record temperatures of the heat waves. Unfortunately, many of them dried up and among some of the affected species it was of the utmost alarm that one of the magnolia species (Magnolia rzedowskiana), because several specimens begin to wilt in the cloud forests where they grow. However, with the arrival of the rains, new buds are beginning to sprout and we expect them to recover 100%. Another example that climate change and its effects are real and happening here and now.

    FEMSA & GESGIAP

With the support of FEMSA Foundation and in collaboration with the Municipality of Jalpan de Serra, we delivered a 3-module Biological Chamber that will allow the staff at the sanitary landfill to manage the organic waste that arrives for processing and disposition in Jalpan de Serra.
The proper management of organic waste (including from butcher shops) not only prevents pollution and wastewater discharges, but also boosts the circular economy. Transforming this waste into compost is a sustainable solution that enriches our soils and closes the nutrient cycle. By investing in responsible waste management practices, we not only protect the environment, but also open up new economic opportunities, creating value from what was previously considered waste.

Caring for Water Is Preserving Life

In our mission to promote the efficient use of water, we have been distributing public service announcement signage with messages about the responsible care of this vital resource in different communities of the Sierra Gorda, with the support of the State Water Commission. These signs´objective is to put water at top of mind and recommend best pratices in the household to prevent waste and contamination.

    Photo of the Month

Despite this year’s horrible drought and heat waves, I was very happy to be able to document this Cooper’s Hawk (Accipiter cooperi) chick, whose hard-working parents pulled through no matter what. Unlike them, this was a very vocal and trusting chick, which gave me the opportunity to photograph it. Cooper´s Hawk are true acrobats, they move freely in the canopy hunting other birds, and yes, the tasty backyard chickens. But it is we who have taken their forest, cleared it and impoverished their ecosystem, not the other way around.
