LOW CARBON EMISSIONS SEAL

As of March 2023, a total of 283 industrial companies based in our state are eligible to obtain the “Low Carbon Emissions Seal” granted by the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SEDESU) of the state of Querétaro. To obtain this seal, companies must submit offset projects to mitigate at least 20 percent of their emissions, and the implementation and compliance of the projects will be verified by an evaluation committee. Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda submitted the Biodiverse Carbon in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve project to the Querétaro State Offset Project Registry, which was approved and published. With this project, forest and jungle owners will benefit from payments for environmental services by promoting forest regeneration in areas cleared for agricultural and livestock purposes and in overgrazed forests, thus ensuring significant CO2e removal and other environmental services.

WATER FORUM

Within the framework of International Water Day, which is commemorated on March 22nd, the Water Forum was held in our “Centro Tierra” facilities, aimed at students from the Technological University of San Juan del Río, the Autonomous University of Querétaro and the State High School in Jalpan de Serra.
We want them to get involved in this topic, from the water problem in the Sierra Gorda, to the possible solutions and actions to take care of this valuable natural resource, which little by little we are seeing more and more scarce.

BEEKEEPING COURSE BEGINS

On March 5th, the course Training New Beekeepers, offered by the Sierra Gorda Ecological Group, was given by the Sierra Gorda technician Mr. Polo Morán and Urbano Molina as an external advisor. During the 4 sessions, we reviewed topics such as: preparation of frames for the development of the hive, the importance of feeding the bees properly, especially during the dry season, the different pests and diseases that can attack the bees, and learning to recognize and combat them in time. We hope with this workshop to consolidate a necessary generational changeover and maintain such an important activity, on which we all depend for pollination services.

EARTH FESTIVALS 2023

These have been days in which we have seen how teachers, housewives, parents and students have put their best effort to participate in an opportunity to reflect on the importance of caring for and protecting our environment. Our Environmental Education team has already visited some of the communities in the Sierra Gorda, such as Soledad de Guadalupe, El Lobo, La Florida, Lagunita de Pitzquintla, Sauz de Guadalupe, El Aguacate, Río Verdito. Puerto de Escanelilla, Rincón de Pitzquintla, Huilotla, Sabino Chico, Limón de la Peña, Los Charcos, Hoyas de Ahuacatlán. They have presented plays, songs, poems, gastronomic samples, posters that spread messages of care for nature, as well as children in costumes for the staging and the only thing we can say is THANK YOU! Thank you because we know the effort involved in doing each of these activities but at the same time we are permeating with a message of love for nature to the next generations and that is a great opportunity. Enter our social networks to know the events in each community.

FIRE SEASON

This is the beginning of a critical season of the year, when drought prevails, heat increases and the risk of forest fires rises. It is important to avoid the use of fire at all costs and keep our forests, jungles and communities safe. Fire is a voracious element, which can destroy everything in its path and what has taken Nature thousands of years of evolution to build. A forest fire ears through beauty and life and turns it to ashes, fueling climate change.
On this occasion, we would like to thank the students of the International School of Querétaro and Mtra. Yeetlih Gómez who organized a collection for the renewal of 10 backpacks for the members of the “Valle Verde” Brigade of this Institution, which operates with the support of the World Land Trust and is already working again, carrying out prevention work and ready to intervene immediately in case of a fire.  We are very pleased to see the goodwill and initiative of the students.

BIOSPHERE RESERVE CARE CAMPAIGN

In support of the State Government, through the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SEDESU) and Secretary Marco del Prete, we initiated a campaign to prohibit the circulation of motor vehicles called “racers” in the Sierra Gorda, given that there is no way to make their use compatible when they use the river bed as a racetrack. The impacts to the biodiversity of the Extoraz River are severe and irremediable. The objective is to protect and conserve the biodiversity of this important natural area, with actions that will allow the care and conservation of different endemic species that live here, as well as the integrity of the ecosystems of the region.  Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3lwxpGx
Don’t encourage it, don’t allow it and if you see it, report it!

SIERRA GORDA ECOTOURS PRESENT AT THE TOURISM TIANGUIS IN MEXICO CITY

The 47th edition of the National Tourism Fair was inaugurated at the CitiBanamex Center in Mexico City from March 26th to 29th. This is a business forum based on pre-established appointments between buyers and exhibitors that promotes a wide variety of tourism products.
On this occasion, with the objective of promoting tourism activities in contact with nature, Sierra Gorda Ecotours was present at the stand of the Querétaro delegation. During these days, tour operators interested in expanding their catalog of experiences for their clients, both from Mexico and abroad, as well as the general public, were attended to. It was a great opportunity for more people to learn about the Regenerative Tourism project and plan their next vacation with family or friends.
The attendees were given brochures with information about the different experiences in nature, the Ruta del Sabor, the Ruta de Eco-lodging  and the Artisan Trail. Everyone was amazed with everything they can learn about in the north of the State of Queretaro.

Photo of the month | Tecolote Tamaulipeco

I suspected they might be and dreamed of recording the Tamaulipan Tecolote (Glaucidium sanchezi) in the Sierra Gorda. Yesterday I finally did (and a couple!), and even better in one of the reserves that we steward, oblivious to the forest degradation that prevails in many of these mountains. An honor to serve as a dam and to have a preserved house.
It is a species endemic to northeastern Mexico and one of the smallest owls. Although it closely resembles its cousin, the Tecolote Bajeño (Glaucidium brasilianum), the subtle markings on its forehead, the plumage of its tail and its call leave no room for doubt.
