Women and Energy WESS 2023

We attended the first WESS 2023 Women and Energy Summit, where Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda was awarded thanks to the tireless work of Pati Ruiz Corzo for more than 36 years. We are very grateful and appreciate this recognition, which motivates us to continue our work. Our colleague Fernanda Bermúdez Soto attended on her behalf.

The Macaw´s Tune

Thanks to the Museo Histórico de la Sierra Gorda, to its Director, our dear friend Miguel Ángel Herrera, and to the municipal DIF for bringing the endangered green macaws of the Sierra Gorda to a wide public, through the work of Roberto Pedraza and the Queretaro photographer Ricardo Azarcoya, with the exhibition “The Macaw´s Tune” which opened on July 31 and will be on display until mid-July. Let’s assume that the macaws are seriously threatened (loss of habitat, uncontrolled tourism, or those that fall each year due to human predation, etc.) and completely unprotected. Either we protect them or these mountains will be left without their magnificent presence and voices. The best thing is that the photographs are on public roads and there they will reach thousands of people, we hope that they will awaken their empathy and join in their protection.

Donation of Materials for the Embroiderers

The Sierra Gorda Ecological Group received a donation last week, a bequest from a talented craft artist from the city of Queretaro, we would like to recognize Isabel Creixell who made the donation on behalf of the Creixell Family.
Mrs. Creixell donated an impressive variety of buttons, biases and threads in all colors for embroidery, as well as tools for sewing, embroidery and weaving and a sample of fabrics.
We would like to express our deepest appreciation for being considered to receive this treasure and bring it into the hands of the women artisans of the La Colgada embroidery workshop in Pinal de Amoles, Querétaro, in the Sierra Gorda.
And we would like to mention Evergreen School Querétaro, their support has been fundamental in this process to get this donation into the right hands.

Thank you for Joining the Earth Festivities!

We would like to express our gratitude to the parents and teachers of the different schools that participated in the incredible Earth Festivities 2023!
It was a wonderful experience that leaves us with unforgettable memories and seeds of knowledge for the children to carry the message to other places and future generations.
To the parents, we want to thank you for your constant support in instilling in your children values of respect and care for the environment.
To the teachers, our deepest gratitude for their dedication and passion in teaching environmental education. Their tireless work is fundamental to inspire students and transmit knowledge about the importance of protecting and preserving our planet.

Essential Oils for Oregano Producers, the First Workshop

As a follow-up to the project to add value to aromatic species from the semi-desert region in the state of Querétaro, a workshop was held to obtain oregano oil.
Oregano is an aromatic plant whose dried leaves are one of the most widely used condiments in the kitchen. In addition, a powerful essential oil with multiple beneficial properties for health is extracted from these leaves and fresh shoots.
Two elements stand out in particular in the composition of this oil: carvacrol and thymol, two phenols that, in addition to being powerful antioxidants, are responsible for making oregano oil effective in combating fungi and bacteria that cause numerous infectious processes.
We thank @oreganicdemexico for facilitating the equipment and the workshop in which the Ejidos of Agua Fría, Boquillas, Enramadas, El Pilón and Maguey Verde, belonging to the Municipality of Peñamiller, participated.

Commemorating Champions of the Earth

Ten years after such a prestigious award as the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Champions of the Earth, which recognized the work and career of Ms. Ruiz Corzo, we received from Nairobi, Kenya, the visit of filmmaker Duncan Moore, commissioned by UNEP to interview our Director and produce a short documentary, to be broadcast during the ceremony for the next laureates in September. It will be a pleasure to share it.

Video of the Month

Today is World Environment Day, which we should assume as habits, practices and changes in our way of life 365 days a year, seeking to reduce our ecological footprint, consumption, energy expenditure and regenerate our environment. We have our planet under severe siege, our biological diversity decimated and even its temperature altered, with fever. But let’s celebrate life, and I am happy to share with you a glimpse into the intimacy of the Green Macaws that still subsist in the Sierra Gorda.

Beekeeping Workshop for Young People

We visited the students of Mtra. Julieta Mar of Secundaria Técnica No. 3 in Jalpan de Serra, to share with them some of the work we do in beekeeping. Our technician Don Polo Moran, shared with the students the importance of bees as pollinators, as well as the basic elements required for those who want to start this noble activity. We are very pleased that young people are interested in the subject, and best of all, that they adopt these productive activities in order to promote the much needed generational change in the region.

Biodiverse Carbon in Xilitla

On tour with friends from Ejido Ollita del Pino, in Xilitla county in San Luis Potosí State, and its magnificent cloud forest, now protected thanks to the World Land Trust and voluntary carbon offsets. They have protected the forest, demonstrating the Ejido fulfilling its obligations and carbon and biodiversity are where they should be, in addition to the provision of other environmental services such as hydrological recharge. With part of their resources, they decided to build a water storage tank for the benefit of the inhabitants of Ollita del Pino, and are in the process of building another.
It´s a pleasure to have them as partners.

One More Clean-up Campaign

Last Friday, Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda and workers from the Jalpan Sanitary Landfill carried out one more cleaning campaign, on the stretch of road that goes from Piedras Anchas to Malila. We traveled 1.5 km and collected approximately 700 kg of solid waste on the roadside and in clandestine dumps.
We make an urgent call to unite in the task of preserving our roads and natural environments clean. It is our duty to take care of the environment, therefore, we ask you to properly separate your waste and take responsibility for its final disposal. If you see someone littering in the street or on the roads, report it.
Remember, our roads and highways are a window to the world and we must keep them clean and cared for. Together Serranos and visitors can make a difference and ensure a more sustainable future for all. Thank you for your cooperation!

Photo of the Month | Military Macaws

Highly intelligent, sociable, cheerful and vocal, the Green Macaws are true queens of these mountains, but unfortunately they face a long series of threats. Large areas of their forests have been cleared, humans continue to transform their habitat, they face droughts and the consequences of climate change, and the increasing pressure of tourism on their nesting and roosting sites, particularly canyoning. Let’s assume that either we citizens protect them or they are completely unprotected and we may lose them. We invite you to visit the exhibition “El Son de la Guacamaya” in the Historic Museum in Jalpan de Serra, Qro., and see the photographs by Ricardo Azarcoya and Roberto Pedraza,  bringing us closer to such wonderful birds.
Without a doubt, the Sierra Gorda would not be the same without them.
