Facing COP26

We are in the midst of ecological collapse and global warming; humanity has already made a deep gash in nature, wasting its natural resources and reaching a point of no return.

Dramatic consequences are felt in a variety of changes in the climate, our reality is not that of our grandparents. This catastrophe is hitting society in different ways, because these phenomena promise a dire loss of quality of life, where our wellbeing has been compromised and leaves future generations without the shelter of the loving home that humanity has known. We are dispossessed, with the numbers in the red that will inevitably mark the future.

We hope that COP26 is not more of the same inaccessible financing, long and expensive consultancies, slowed down governments, a lack of commitments, and no one willing to sacrifice business-as-usual for the common good all while society takes a nosedive.

We should start with ourselves, with new social and personal values. We should reinvent ourselves, invoke the common good, and change the paradigm towards motivating people to give, give and give. It’s time to reconcile ourselves with Nature, induce regeneration at all levels, and to sow hope. It is up to us, today.

#ReduceYourFootprint

We started the #ReduceYourFootprint campaign via our online channels. This campaign invites Querétaro’s industrial sector and the general public to reduce their carbon footprint on Carbon Neutral Planet and protect the forests of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve.

Live with Dosal

On Thursday, November 4th, we will have an Instagram Live conversation between our spokesperson Alfonso Dosal, ambassador of GESG, and Pati Ruiz Corzo, to talk about the importance of reducing your carbon footprint and protecting the forests of the Sierra Gorda.

Centro Tierra

At the Centro Tierra headquarters we had a workshop for beneficiaries of the program, “Local Mechanisms for Payment for Environmental Services,” which was led by our partners Bosque Sustentable A.C..

The workshop covered various themes related to the program: rules of operation, stewardship responsibilities, and the importance of protecting the Sierra Gorda ecosystems.  We celebrate their active participation because their small actions make a great difference for nature and society.

Camp out at Suelo Vivo Ranch

Students from the Autonomous University of Querétaro in Querétaro City attended our “Nature-based Solutions Camp” hosted at Living Soil Ranch, in Tonatico, in Pinal de Amoles.  There were 25 young participants from different disciplines.  The camp was coordinated by the President of the Student Federation (FEUQ), Andrés Cuapio Reséndiz, the general coordinator of the Sierra Gorda regional campus, Fernando Rocha Mier, and Olivia Pérez of GESG´s Environmental Education Program.

The student group reviewed topics like organic agriculture, making compost, the use of biofertilizers, and how to tame horses naturally.  They went on a guided walk where they learned about the environmental services provided by forests; took a workshop on how to make jam from their gardens, an introduction to blacksmithing and a talk about the biodiversity found in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve.

Photo of the Month

Dahlias are México’s national flower.  There are 43 species of Dahlias in the Americas, almost all of them are endemic to Mexico. They are flowering now in the humid cloud forest, providing a touch of extraordinary color and contrast with the saturated greens of the moss and ferns.

Visit Sierra Gorda

Camera traps in Ollita del Pino

We collected camera traps that were placed more than 2 months ago in the Ejido Ollita del Pino, located in Xilitla, San Luis Potosí. The cameras registered a rich diversity of mammals: heavy-set pacas, brocket deer, margay and a female opossum using its tail as a hand to caress leaves (among other species).

This is part of the Carbon Balanced project funded by the World Land Trust, which compensates 4 ejidos from the upper part of the Sierra in Xilitla for their conservation and for securing the capture and storage of CO2.
