Fifth Carbon Payment From the World Land Trust
Last Friday, the fifth payment for carbon capture and storage to forest owners who are part of the project with the World Land Trust and operate in the municipalities of Jalpan de Serra and Landa de Matamoros, received this payment for effectively protecting forests where carbon is captured and stored. Besides, where the forest reigns, the best antidote to heat waves and drought effects and environmental services are provided. It´s a privelege to have as partners Serranos, the local residents, committed to conservation.
Recycling Center in Purísima Arista
We continued with the commitment to strengthen the Recycling collection Centers in the region, and on this occasion, 4 metal signs were delivered to collection centers highlighting the importance of their work and encouraging community participation in recycling. In addition, assistance was provided to the recycler 𝐋𝐚 𝐂𝐢𝐞́𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐚 𝐝𝐞 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐢́𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐚 𝐝𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚 by providing the necessary material for the adaptation of a cage in their van and improving efficiency in the transportation of recoverable materials.
These actions are not only a tangible gesture of support, but also a recognition of the effort and dedication of local recyclers.
Sustainable Living Boot Camp
We welcomed 24 students from the “Unidad Tecnológica de San Juan del Río, Campus Jalpan” in a productive 2-day educational camp. The students had the opportunity to learn about ecological practices, nature and soil conservation, organic farming, recycling, and much more, both at our facilities and at the Rancho Suelo Vivo. We hope that the knowledge acquired will inspire them.
Introductory Workshop on Forest Therapy
With participants from the communities of La Trinidad and La Silleta, as well as tourist guides from Xilitla and the Sierra Gorda in Querétaro, received a 3-day introductory workshop on forest therapy thanks to the support of Monte de Piedad and GESG. The participants learned about the background of this practice, group management and above all the importance of knowing and appropriating their forest and the cultural elements of their community in order to enrich the experience of the tourists and in their own operations.
In addition to performing different practices in which they implemented forest therapy, participants learned about the physical, emotional and social benefits that forests provide us, how they work, the different types of forests and how they benefit us by releasing chemicals that we breathe and that benefit our body when we walk conscienciously.
If you wish to learn more about this practice you can request a tour on your next visit to La Trinidad Ecotourism Complex or through Sierra Gorda Ecotours (7295477776; contacto@sierragordaecotours.com).
La última gota
Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda IAP, La Gaviota Teatro and the State Water Commission of Querétaro, joined forces to present the play “The Last Drop”, to raise awareness among the community of the General Ignacio Manuel Altamirano High School, about this year’s exceptional drought and water shortage, on October 18, 2023, in front of the entire school community. We are sure that these collaborations are an effective way of transmitting information that our children and young people can take home to share with their families. And it was the first of several performances that we will be taking to the community.
Healthy Water Treatment
On the occasion of Inter-American Water Day, wastewater treatment was launched in Río Verdito, Landa de Matamoros, thanks to a partnership managed by GESG and agreed upon with the State Water Commission, the inhabitants of the communities and the municipal authorities. It is an innovative formula in technology, operation and advanced management to address the problem of raw water discharged into drains and rivers. This action is being carried out in collaboration with experts from Grupo de Tecnología Alternativa S.C. (GTA) who have made possible this long-awaited achievement in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, which will significantly improve the quality of life in the communities. We hope to have the system installed and operating as soon as possible.
Sierra Gorda Arca de Vida
On Wednesday, October 11, 2023 in the dance classroom of the Ignacio Manuel Altamirano High School in Pinal de Amoles, our colleague and wildlife photographer, Roberto Pedraza Ruiz, gave his talk “Sierra Gorda, Ark of Life” to the students of the institution, in which he presented his photographic work and mentioned aspects about the state of conservation and biodiversity of the region. This activity was coordinated by Science teacher Diana Karina Piedra Reynoso, and we thank the Director and other teachers for their support in carrying it out.
Photo of the Month
A very Neotropical Imperial Bromeliad (Tillandsia imperialis) from a highland cloud forest, with a Nearctic visitor, a beautiful female Townsend’s Warbler (Setophaga townsendi), which can come from Alaska, Canada or the northwestern USA. This mix of species and ecosystems makes the Sierra Gorda so special and unique. We wish such an outstanding traveler a happy stay, fat insects for lunches and a safe return trip in early Spring.
