EarthCheck, Bronze Distinction: a regional challenge taken on by SECTUR Querétaro

We are seeking to establish a consistent improvement in tourism processes and environmental health in the region, and on October 28th, 46 stakeholders participated, taking part in cleaning up, mitigating and managing tourism impacts, and we will be ready for the Silver Seal audit in two years. By then, we will have cleaned up all the corners of the Sierra Gorda. This is a collaborative process between tourism stakeholders in the region, local municipalities and the State Government (SECTUR and SEDESU), and GESG to substantially improve the sustainability of tourism activities in the region, improving and acting on a variety of points, with the support of EarthCheck experts.

December 04, Call to Earth Day – CNN

We were selected to have GESG activities featured in the series “The Call to Earth” as part of the annual Rolex Perpetual Planet campaign with CNN, which this year rises in high spirits, with lots of activity and releasing pressure on the Planet. The third week of October we were honored to receive the film crew, CNN Español and International producer, and the reporter and news anchor Gabriela Frias, for the production of informative materials about our work in the Sierra Gorda.

A Meeting with Governor Kuri in Jalpan

Taking advantage of the visit to the Sierra Gorda by Mr. Mauricio Kuri González, Queretaro State Governor, our Director had a one-on-one meeting and was able to share a variety of environmental issues and urgencies with him, and found the best response.

“Dear Governor Kuri, thank you very much for the impulse to climate action in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, which will result in the regeneration of its forests, the sanitation of its waters, the good management of solid waste and the formation of an ecological culture and entrepreneurship for its society. Querétaro, a spearhead with concrete actions, a beacon of climate answers, a sustainable future for all Queretaro residents.”

-Martha Isabel “Pati” Ruiz Corzo.

Teachers in Action for the Planet

GESG, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sustainable Development and the USEBEQ, gathered 28 educational authorities at the Centro Tierra facilities to carry out a follow-up workshop on teacher-driven climate action. Pati Ruiz Corzo emphasized the importance of the educational authorities to make a change and transformation in the communities as decisionmakers by internalizing the Green Protocol for school action plans of the within the State’s public education system and to present the environmental action guide under the guidelines of the New Mexican School.

Carbono Biodiverso Here and Now

This month, our forestry team visited forestry properties to verify their conservation status and their owners’ compliance commitments to the “Querétaro Low Emissions Seal”, as well as the effects of drought on their trees. These properties are registered in our Carbono Biodiverso project, through which companies mitigate their carbon emissions in the forests of the Sierra Gorda.
Thus, the forests regenerate and capture carbon in biomass by removing livestock, chainsaws, and eliminating forest fires. At the same time, the people of the Sierra Gorda improve their quality of life with the income they earn. By 2024, more than 80 landowners whose land covers an area of 20,000 hectares of temperate and cloud forests in the Sierra Gorda, Querétaro, have benefited, regenerating their forests and recovering natural capital.
Carbono Biodiverso sets the example of local solutions with the valuable participation of: UBER Planet, HARMAN, ATMEX, Secrets and Dreams Hotels, FANDELI, Lyncott, in 2024.

Salamander Expedition

With the sponsorship of the World Land Trust we carried out this week’s Expedition-Salamander, in search of the small and micro-endemic Flat-footed Salamander (Chiropterotriton magnipes), nocturnal and cave-dwelling, which we indeed found with the support of amphibian experts, Bióls. Alejandro Calzada Arciniega and Raúl Gómez Trejo, both in an Ejido in Xilitla, (which I will not mention so as not to put the salamanders at risk) and one of the reserves that we safeguard. We found other fantastic amphibians and reptiles, inhabitants of temperate and cloud forests. An honor to effectively protect their habitat, doing conservation and not conversation.

Clean-up Campaign

Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda in collaboration with Eco Sierra Gorda Extreme, carried out the fifth clean-up campaign on the road to Malila. Together, we covered 1.5 km and collected about 350 kg of solid waste.

We thank all the volunteers who made this journey possible, but we also make a call to the community: do not throw garbage in prohibited places.

Photo of the Month

October is the month of bats. These nocturnal animals provide many benefits, some are excellent pest controllers, others pollinate plants and maintain balance not only for the environment but also for human and plant health. The one in the picture was full of guavas, sleepily digesting after a hearty dinner.

Let’s take care of the bats!
