Community Tourism, Destination Sierra Gorda
We believe in investing in and strengthening local infrastructure for communities who are the owners of the forests, the biodiversity and scenic beauty therein. They do not have the capacity to offer tourist services or generate alternative revenue sources alone. Travelers expect a certain level of service, a culture we are building locally. We have generated a network of 55 skilled mirco-businesses that are now generating incomes through a community tourism model. These businesses are having an impact on gender equality and resilience. We are pushing for a regional economy among local entrepreneurs, looking to have the smallest environmental impact and carefully constructing rules for controlling tourism impacts. We have been recognized as Early Adopters by Global Sustainable Tourism Council. We have also been awarded the National Geographic World Legacy Award and World Tourism Organization Award for our inclusive vision.
