    NYC Climate Week

Concluding a hyperactive week in New York City, on Monday with the Global Evergreening Alliance; on Wednesday we signed the Addendum to formally integrate the GESG and our Registry Carbono Biodiverso into the “Carbon Ecosystem” as well as the announcement by Apala Group of the carbon compansation by Uber Planet in Sierra Gorda.; then a meeting where our colleague David Ross described the local protocol to Global EverGreening Alliance, EcoRestoration Alliance and stakeholders from Panama and Mexico. We also had special meetings with our allies and friends from OpenForests, Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship and Global Citizen.

    Uber Planet chooses Biodiverse Carbon

Uber announces its commitment to the regeneration of the country’s natural heritage by joining the “Carbono Biodiverso” project, developed by the Sierra Gorda Ecological Group (GESG).

The Carbono Biodiverso project, implemented in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, Querétaro, seeks to restore local forests through carbon sequestration, ecosystem regeneration and biodiversity enhancement. Thanks to the participation of landowners such as Donaciano Chávez Márquez, who has protected 55 hectares of forest for the past 8 years. The model has proven to be effective in regenerating  degraded forested areas and creating sustainable economic benefits for rural communities.

This collaboration reflects Uber’s focus on supporting sustainable initiatives that have a positive impact on the environment and local communities.

    Reforesting the Sierra Gorda

20,000 Trees distributed in the Sierra Gorda!

Since June, we have had the honor of distributing different species of trees: thunder, rosewood, ash, white cedar, framboyan, jacaranda, goat’s foot, lemon balm, moringa, guamúchil, pistache, among others, totaling 20,000 specimens distributed in 29 of the various communities that make up the municipalities of Jalpan de Serra, Arroyo Seco, Landa de Matamoros and Pinal de Amoles. This initiative is part of our joint reforestation effort and the collaboration of EARTHDAY.ORG who has sponsored and made it possible for the Sierra Gorda to become green, 792 men and 808 women of different ages, committed citizens who have participated in this climate action to counteract the effects of climate change.

Each tree planted is a step towards a greener and more sustainable future. Trees are intrinsically related to water, because they attract rain and make possible the recharge of springs, streams and rivers and together they provide a variety of environmental services. We are deeply grateful to all those who have participated in this noble cause, demonstrating that together we can make a big difference.

    Biological Chamber Monitoring

At GESG, we remain committed to the continuous monitoring of the 5 biological chambers sponsored by FEMSA Foundation for the treatment of organic waste.

Our goal is to ensure that this project works 100%, guaranteeing not only the correct operation of the chambers, but also providing constant advice to the work groups involved. We strive to meet the established goals and actively contribute to the sustainability of our region. The chambers process meat waste in the cities of Jalpan de Serra and Pinal de Amoles, producing excellent compost instead of contamination.

    Aromatics of the Queretaro Semidesert

We had a fruitful meeting sponsored by SEDESU, at the GESG facilities, with representatives from 5 ejidos in the semi-desert of Querétaro. Together, we continue to advance in the implementation of better harvesting practices and the transformation of aromatic plants such as oregano, damiana and pennyroyal.

This project consists of the development of capacities in Ejidos that are dedicated to the harvesting of aromatic plants, for the implementation of better practices that allow the regeneration of the species, and the obtaining of better quality products. The group of Ejidos belonging to the Municipality of Peñamiller has been equipped to process oregano and damiana, as well as to extract essential oils from oregano, with which they are now developing cosmetic products, food supplements and other products, adding value to the region’s non-timber resources.

Delivery of Water Tanks in the Municipality of Pinal de Amoles

We are proud to share that we have delivered two liner-type water storage tanks with a capacity to store 75,000 liters in the communities of La Tinaja and San Isidro, Pinal de Amoles, this past month.

Members of the environmental committee and community residents participated in this event, in addition to the presence of Olivia Pérez Jiménez, Head of Environmental Education at GESG, and the elected president of the municipality, Lupita Ramírez Plaza, along with City Hall staff.

We continue working to strengthen our mountain communities, improving the water supply during the dry season. With this tank, there are now seven delivered in the municipality, and we will continue to promote actions for a sustainable future thanks to FEMSA Foundation and CEA.

    Photo of the month

The Mountain Tree Frog (Dryophites eximius) is a little gem endemic to Mexico and an inhabitant of its temperate forests among other habitats. Finding them after this year’s horrible drought and heat waves is a treat, as it means that the amphibians are highly resilient and somehow survived in the Sierra Gorda. This little one is an inhabitant of a protected forest, where she finds a safe home, free of agrochemicals and the forests are not touched. The best recipe to slow down the sixth wave of mass extinction.

Video of the month Sierra Gorda Biodiverse Carbon GLP Films

GESG is a pioneer in the Voluntary Carbon Market, and the Local Protocol is the result of a real urgency to address the local signs of climate change decades ago, all thanks to a group of passionate people with a plan.
Our strategy was built by answering “yes” where those global markets said “no”, and focusing on including local landowners in areas of high biodiversity with the most robust and accessible system in the local context.
Our system is based on trust, broad community participation, a holistic approach and problem solving, as well as the institutional strengths of love, resilience, transparency of funds and quality control.
