2021 Equator Prize

Querétaro State Government is a leader in climate change action at the sub-national level, making a case for natural regeneration.  For six years running, they have compensated forest owners for recuperating ecosystem services, assigning a monetary value to carbon footprint reduction services.  Recognizing the urgent need to recuperate ecosystem services, the Secretariat of Sustainable Development formed a strategic partnership with the civil society organization, it´s 34 years of lessons learned, and adopted a public policy in response.

Governor of Querétaro, Mauricio Kuri extended his congratulations on the 2021 Equator Prize: “Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda shows us how you mitigate climate change and address its consequences from the grassroots.  They demonstrate that the fight to address climate change can be won.”

“Querétaro, today, is a living laboratory of regenerative practices, we have a program that sets an example for focusing on local climate action,” declared Martha Isabel Ruiz Corzo, GESG leader. “We are very proud to be part of this collective of planet-loving people who recognize the possibility of a miracle, to let the regenerative energy flow in our soils, in our forests and heal as much as we can on the planet.”

Live with Alfonso Dosal – Launching the campaign: #ReducetuHuella #NatureforClimate

Thursday, October 7th we will have a conversation with Alfonso Dosal, award-winning actor and our Ambassador on Instagram Live at 19:00.  You don’t want to miss it!

Planned Grazing

In southern Querétaro State, our colleague the Engineer Alfredo Chavero, educator in holistic management shares these photos of the before and after results in a parcel located in San José La Laja, Tequisquiapan.  The parcel has been managed using planned grazing for the past 3 years.  During which time, the community dynamics are taken into account and other life cycles are functioning correctly.

Water Security in the Sierra Gorda

We met with Dr. Marinus L. Otte, of North Dakota State University and the Autonomous University of Querétaro, to establish a dialogue on water security and water treatment in the Sierra Gorda as part of the Fulbright Specialist Program project titled, “Water management in a karstic rural impoverished environment.”
The project seeks to improve and manage the conservation of water and wetlands. Workshops and activities on education in aquatic sciences and functional designs of wetlands were carried out with different social actors. We visited a recharge zone to highlight the importance of forest conservation for hydrological capture in the upper, middle and lower parts of the basins.
In this meeting, it was possible to work together to identify the strategies that generate a culture of rainwater capture and water purification in the region, as well as the methodologies to carry out an effective treatment of wastewater discharges that were previously untreated.

Photo of the Month

Like many other species of birds, each year Ruby-throated hummingbirds migrate from the south of Canada and East of the United States to Costa Rica and Panama for the winter.  They pass through the Sierra Gorda for a couple of days, recharging their energy with nectar from wild bean flowers.  Thanks to the rains, this year there are abundant flowers. They will continue their trips with full bellies.  We welcome them.  To read more click here.
