Ecological Leaders Come Together to Face Environmental Deterioration

The Fifth Assembly of the Global Environmental Fund (GEF) was hosted in Cancún, Mexico on 25th-30th May. GEF is the main financial mechanism for environmental projects throughout the world. Grupo Ecológico Siera Gorda I.A.P. (GESGIAP) was a GEF partner from 2001-2009, receiving support for our “Conserving the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve’s Biodiversity” project.

Due to GESGIAP’s involvement with GEF, we were invited to participate in the Assembly, together with representatives from 87 other countries, members of government and international and civil society organizations. The event’s objective was to discuss solutions to global environmental deterioration. Martha Ruiz Corzo spoke on behalf of the CSOs at the Round Table discussion about natural capital. Her comments were heard by Dr. Rosina Bierbaum of GEF’s Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel.

Celebrating land conservation

World Land Trust (WLT) is based in the United Kingdom and its emphasis on direct action has created private nature reserves throughout the world. It has protected almost 1.5 million hectares of forests and rainforests through its 27 local partners in 20 countries, from Borneo to Latin America. In Mexico, Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda I.A.P. (GESGIAP) is its only partner. In 2014, WLT celebrated its 25th anniversary and invited GESGIAP to Kew Gardens in London to attend its Symposium with all of its other partners. Despite geographical distances, the partners shared the same interest in protecting some of the last wild bastions on the planet, as well as similar strategies and activities.

Learning about Horse Dental Care

Did you know that most horses die because they aren’t able to eat?

In May, we were honored to host a workshop on horse dental care, led by Juan Pimienta, who studied at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara and has a Master’s from the United States in equine dental care. The workshop was organized by Mario David Pedraza Ruiz, with the objective of teaching the owners how to take care of their horses’ teeth. During the workshop, horse owners learned about the most common problems with horses’ teeth, mouths and jaws and how this can affect their behavior.

Vegetable Garden Workshop

This past month, Bosque Sustentable (B.S.) organized a follow-up workshop with 84 women and men, who have recently established their own organic vegetable gardens, to talk about their results and experiences. After introductory sessions with B.S. promoters, the participants have learnt how to use bio-intensive gardening techniques, including garden design, bed preparation, planting, transplanting, pruning and finally, how to get the most nutritious value from the produce. They have also learnt how to create their own garden inputs, such as, biofertilizer and compost. In addition, they shared their experiences in separating their rubbish, recycling and healthy eating (leaving behind tinned and prepared foods as well as excess salt, fat and sugary drinks).

Photo of the Month

An ancient oak trunk is home to a myriad of life forms in the Sierra Gorda cloud forests. Ferns and bromeliads find their niche in such a place, and similarly salamanders find their hiding spot. As time passes, their organic matter will convert into carbon and return to the soil, giving nutrients to new trees. Photo by Roberto Pedraza Ruiz.
