Extreme sports and eco-tourism.
With its infinite collection of landscapes formed by mountains, caves, basements, valleys and canyons, the Sierra Gorda in the northeast of Queretaro calls all travelers to venture through its exotic sceneries.
This is where nature hosts extreme activities that defy your limits and at the same time allow you to explore colonial treasures hidden in the depths of its majestic mountains. For instance, the five Franciscan missions declared World Heritage Sites by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
With its wide variety of environments – most of them of warm climate – the Sierra Gorda is the place to practice all sorts of ecotourism activities such as: hiking, rappelling, mountain biking, caving and other activities. All of them supervised by the Ecological Group of Sierra Gorda.
Declared a nature reserve in 1997, the Sierra Gorda of Queretaro is the home of exotic animals in danger of extinction, such as: the green macaw, the black bear, the green toucan, the Humboldt butterfly, among others. It is also the home of more than 1,700 kinds of plants, 360 species of birds, 130 different mammals and over 100 varieties of amphibians and reptiles.
No matter where you have decided to start your journey in the Sierra, you will find yourself constantly surrounded by majestic landscapes, including that of the Cuatro Palos outlook, one of the most breathtaking spots in the reserve and perhaps all of Mexico. At its base lies the Cerro de la Media Luna (lit. “the Hill of the Half Moon), the former convent of Bucareli and the world’s third largest monolith known, the Peña de Bernal (Lit. “the Crag of Bernal). The view from here is amazing.
Lodging at the Sierra Gorda is full of options, from warm and colorful hotels to ecological cabins and even – for those who love to sleep under the stars and be in touch with nature – camping sites.
Dining at the Sierra implies enjoying delicious homemade meals prepared by local women. Flavors that you won’t find any place else.
You must experience traveling through the Sierra Gorda of Queretaro. Its roads, its nature and the majesty of its mountains will mark you forever.
