Early this May, a group of primary school and community educators attended a workshop in the Sierra Gorda Earth Center to find out more about sustainable living.

Photographer and nature expert, Roberto Pedraza Ruiz spoke about the incredible biodiversity to be found in the Sierra Gorda, and invited them to help protect the natural heritage of the reserve, by informing their students and students’ parents about the importance of every living creature to nature’s delicate balance.
Students also enjoyed a field trip to the Holistic Management ranch in Tonatico, where they received an introduction to soil regeneration and holistic livestock management by Mario Pedraza Ruiz, director of Bosque Sustentable’s Soil Regeneration program. At the ranch, they observed the use of electric fences in Holistic Management and visited the organic vegetable garden. Finally, they tried the healthy and nutritious produce from the vegetable garden.

The following day, the Environmental Education team presented a play called “The Earth is Desertifying”, in order to show the educators the effectiveness of theatre an artistic, playful and very successful tool for communicating often complex topics like conservationism and climate change to students.

Finally, the participants visited “Casita Ecológica” to observe and learn about ecological alternatives that they can implement in the home: rainwater capture, solar heating, dry compost toilets and eco-construction, using an ancient mixture of clay, reeds and dry straw.

By the end of the workshop, we hope the participants were armed with knowledge and materials to raise awareness about the environment in both their schools and communities.

At the end of May, a group of 18 primary school and community educators who had participated in the previous workshop on sustainable living returned to the Sierra Gorda Earth Center to take part in a workshop on how to make life size puppets to use in plays. Participants started by covering giant balloons with papier maché, then formed facial features and the body structure. The resulting life-size puppets will be used in a play performed in local communities.
